| Or maybe it's a party hat |
[Dec. 27th, 2009|09:54 am] |

Carelessly left behind by a Bacchanalian reveler, this headdress allowed a celebrant to assume the role of Cernunnos, or some other local permutation of the Horned God. The holly leaves--sacred to the Druids--symbolize the promise of life within the living death of winter, and the bells keep away evil spirits. The green of the antlers echoes the evergreen plants in the holy wood, while the red represents the blood of Christian children sacrificed for Saturnalia. |

| Tamron vs Sigma for Canon |
[Dec. 26th, 2009|05:48 pm] |
Trying to decide between two lenses. I'm upgrading from the Canon kit lens, and these two seem to have the most consistent reviews in my price range. I can't spend more, so please don't advise me to get a higher priced lens.
SIGMA 18-50 F2.8 MACRO EX DC CANON
TAMRON 17-50MM XR DI-II F2.8 CANON
Landscapes and people are what I shoot most. And it's the Canon XS.
I actually got the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens for Christmas, but I'm not a huge fan of it. I was planning to return it and use that to partially finance the new lens. Does it make more sense to just hold on to that one and keep my kit lens for now? |

I love Winter landscapes, especially when it's turning to dusk. I decided to share this particular image as it really embodies the tranquil and almost ethereal quality that I love about Winter. Taken on Christmas Eve, a few Photoshop adjustments.

| | incubus | ] | Hi, just joined. I'm 19 and my name is Andrea. I have a two year old who I like to take pictures of and I like bird watching and taking nature walks, and I really don't know anything about cameras. My aunt got me a really basic digital camera two years ago and it gets the job done but it's gotten a bit of wear and tear along the way, I was wondering about buying a new camera. I was wanting one with a zoom lens so I could get decent pictures of wildlife and such, but I really don't know where to start. Also a camera that's rather sturdy and somewhat reasonably priced... Do you know of good books or websites about cameras, taking care of cameras, and taking pics? Do you have a favorite type of camera you could reccomend to someone like me? I really don't know where to get started but I'd like to get better at taking pictures and stuff...
I know there is google but I like asking other humans my questions. =/ |

| The proverbial: |
[Dec. 25th, 2009|04:31 am] |
I am probably far from the first to think of this, but who knows, maybe it has not been posted too much:

I actually don't know if this is a proverb outside of the US (or even for all age groups in the US), or outside the English speaking world, but trust me, this is funny. |

Hi, all!
Well, I figured that since I find interesting objects on a regular basis, I ought to join this community. So I set up an account for this express purpose!
In my town, there is a store called East Bay Depot, which sells all kinds of craft materials and unwanted objects, from buttons to toilet paper tubes to old textbooks. Oh yeah, and perhaps most importantly, discarded art!
I just picked up this lovely number today for $1.65:

The writing at the top/ bottom says, "hey joe/ take a walk on the wild side", and the writing coming out of the Marilyn Monroe heads says, "what is a superstar".
This is going to make an excellent Xmas gift!

| Arnold Stang, actor known for nerdy roles, dies. |
[Dec. 24th, 2009|03:09 pm] |
I was skimming obituaries (please don’t judge me for this) when I found one entitled “Arnold Stang, actor known for nerdy roles, dies.”
This poor guy was known for being a nerd even in death.

Arnold, I did not know any of your roles, or anything about you, except that you are a kindred spirit. May your nerdiness continue to serve you well, even in the afterlife. |
